Here comes the book, which has accompanied me through the ups and downs of my work-experience in the BBC earlier this year: “the Devil Wears Prada” by Lauren Weisberger, 2003. I found this little book in beautifully painted red cover while waiting for my early morning flight to Belfast in Gatwick. Failed to impress myself by buying a book after lingering around all duty free perfume shops in Gatwick, I held the book open in front of my face and fell asleep in the waiting room.

My second day in the BBC was unexpectedly long and wet, it was not until 9pm when the cameraman finally drove me back to my hostel after a live transmition in the pouring rain. When I read how Andrea, the main character in the novel, suffered from her first long day in the “Runway” magazine, I decided to read the book every night before sleep. It feels like chatting to another girl who too has just dived into the real world and sharing the pains and jokes.

The book is not as fast paced and smart as Candace Bushnell’s “Sex and the City” (even though some say it is, in book reviews), which is a little mixture of sexy and cunning gossips of the 30 and 40+ New Yorkers really (luckily, we are still 30-! Isn’t that amazing?!!). “The Devil” is much closer to the life of a new Graduate, as well as 100% New York flavor.

I have only reached half of the book so far, and find it encouraging to the desperate new graduates, who we definitely are or will soon be, testing their skills in the real world. If you think you have a *** (which includes a thousand horrific words that I omitted in order to save space) boss, then read the book, and you might recover from your trauma. But I have to say, the bosses I met in the BBC Northern Ireland are just lovely! I really mean it! And they, luckily, have nothing to do with the book whatsoever.

I’d just finished the book today, and did not like it at all for the cheesy ending. Afterall, not recommended…. Well, I mean, I did liked the first 80% of the book, but I do feel sorry for the ending, could have been better really! If one have decided to take on the challenge and the sacrifice, then do it to the end. You really don’t have to make a statement on the expense of all your own hardwork…
